OverviewMargaret Oliphant (1828-97) had a prolific literary career that spanned almost fifty years. She wrote some 98 novels, fifty or more short stories, twenty-five works of non-fiction, including biographies and historic guides to European cities, and more than three hundred periodical articles. This collection represents the most ambitious critical edition of her work and includes At his Gates (1872), The Ladies Lindores (1883), and Old Mr Tredgold (1895). The three volume set, edited by experts in the field, is accompanied by original editorial material including a new general introduction and headnotes to each work. Her research interests focus on the nineteenth-century periodical press, nineteenth-century women's writing, book history, life-writing and bibliography. She is the President of the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals and holds an Honorary Moser Fellowship at the Humanities Research Institute, University of Keele. Elisabeth Jay is Emerita Professor of English at Oxford Brookes University, where her research interests lie in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the interdisciplinary area of literature and theology and the permeable boundaries between fiction, biography and autobiography. She is a Fellow of the English Association and of the American Society for the Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture. Joanne Wilkes is Professor in the Department of English Drama & Writing Studies at the University of Auckland, where her research interests lie in nineteenth century literature and criticism, especially women's fiction and criticism, the poetry of Byron and Keats, and the links between British and French literature. She was a Volume Editor for Pickering & Chatto's edited collection, The Works of Elizabeth Gaskell (2006). Josie Billington lectures in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Liverpool, where she specializes in Victorian literature and in research on reading and health. She has published widely on the power of literary reading to influence mental health and well-being.
