After her father's death the family moved to Tennessee, USA in 1865. She started writing for magazines soon after moving to the United States and went on to write, and have published, a number of adult novels. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 followed by Little Princess in 1905 and The Secret Garden in 1911.
