The Secret City: A Spy's Guide to London

Overview

The world's great powers have waged discreet war in London's streets. This conflict has been played out in leafy parks, tube stations, office blocks, bars and even chain restaurants. The Secret City charts locations where the course of history has been altered, from the early 20th century to the present day through assassinations, arrests and assignations. Our survey of illicit activity takes the reader on a tour that includes mundane street furniture used as dead letter drops, exclusive apartment blocks that were home to double-agents, and the 'irredeemably insecure' building that was formerly MI6 headquarters.

Author Information

Richard Hutt has spent many years building a cover story in broadcasting and media regulation. He has made radio programs about wine, TV programs about cinema and books about being a man. His interest in espionage began with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and a picture of his father in Moscow in 1967. He lives in the UK. Fiction, reality and the otherworldly co-exist in Herb Lester's universe. Since 2010, our illustrated maps have documented the distinctive in the world's great cities as well as charting locations associated with literature, rock'n'roll, the occult and wider pop culture. Increasingly untethered to the real world, our range of notepads from fictional hotels make ideal souvenirs from places no one can visit.
