The Second Day: Book Three of the Mosshaven Trilogy

Overview

Two guild scouts arrive in Mosshaven for professional reasons. Neither intends to stay. Sable Crenn has been here before. She knows the back table at Bramble's Bakery, the fourth marker on the morning run, the way the ancient wood responds to care rather than categories. She has been telling herself for a year that she is simply finishing the work. She has not examined whether this is true. Roen has not been anywhere by choice in eighteen months - not since filing an accurate report about a dangerous trail route and watching the guild bury it. They are precise, constitutionally resistant to charm, and loudly clear about not wanting to be posted to a quiet village in the middle of a revival. Mosshaven receives this with the patience of a community that has done this before. The work is a survey of the Whispering Wood's eastern sector - an ancient forest that has been responding to the people who walk it since long before the guild existed, and has no interest in the guild's categories. The fieldwork keeps producing evidence that the institution cannot hold. The village keeps producing something else entirely. When the guild sends an administrator to assess their findings - and to mention, as a professional courtesy, that the route Roen reported is still certified - both of them will have to decide what they were actually loyal to all along. The Second Day is the concluding volume of the Mosshaven Trilogy: a cozy fantasy about ancient woods, found community, and the specific work of learning to live somewhere rather than through it.
