Overview

In his first non-fiction work, Cussler explores the undersea adventure that inspired and has its fictional parallel in the Dirk Pitt novels. Cussler's NUMA foundation, which is devoted to the preservation of historic shipwrecks, has discovered more than 60 ships. He has chosen 12 of the most interesting, and in wonderful detail describes their histories, how they were sunk, and the trouble or peril he and his volunteers encountered during the searches.
These ships include the steamboat Lexington, lost in the Long Island Sound in the winter of 1840, killing 150; the warship Zavala, abandoned in a Texas marsh in 1842 -- and found by NUMA beneath a parking lot; and Leopoldville, a troop transport torpedoed by the Nazis with the loss of 800 GIs, a disaster the Allies tried to cover up.
