Reviews

Review by CBCA judge, Dr. Virginia Lowe, for The Sea Cat Dreams by J R Poulter, illustrated by Muza Ulasowski; The sea cat - a charming Siamese - dreams of 'the sea, the dolphins, the man' as he lives by the shore with the grieving widow of the sailor man who was his owner and master. The most usual version of death in picture books is a child grieving for a lost pet. Here, in a rare turnaround, it is the cat grieving for its master. Here the man, whom the cat is with, is swept out to sea in a storm, and the cat meows a eulogy for him, and for his sea-life, as well. Poulter's text is in gentle rhyming verse, and Ulasowski's paintings are rich and realistic. Because Puss was born on a farm, there is room for some delightful illustrations of a pup and a girl, geese and ducks, which will be welcomed by young children. Nevertheless, this is a serious topic, perhaps more suited to the older picture book audience. It is valuable for children to have picture books covering all aspects of life (and death). I've have compiled a list of death in picture books. If anyone is interested in it, you could contact me personally.; RECOMMENDATIONS and REVIEWS for The Sea Cat Dreams; ; I am adding The Sea Cat Dreams as a good resource in my new book, The Third Edition of Life and Loss. Linda Goldman, FT, MS counselling, ME early childhood education, LCPC, NBCC www.childrensgrief.net; I found myself identifying with the Sea Cat in the story and this metaphor provided a comforting space from [...] painful loss, but it also normalized it. Like the cat's life, our life is often interrupted by hurtful events. [...] but in the midst of it all there is a safe, calm place on our heart's sill where we know we shall be well, allowing the sorrow to run its course while cherishing the memories.; I would definitely use it with my clients, young and old. Youla Overbey MA, LLPC; The Sea Cat Dreams is [...] very versatile bibliotherapy tool which can be used with children who have experienced different types of life transitions including change and loss in different dimensions.; The Sea Cat Dreams is a book I would wholeheartedly recommend. Claire Casha is a psychology graduate with over ten years' experience of family therapy work [&] reading for a Master in Family Studies.; With beautiful illustrations and lyrical content, clinicians who treat children coping with change (and change is the one consistent fact of any life course) will want to keep this book on their bookshelf [as] a valuable resource ... I highly recommend [it] and commend the author for addressing change in a way that can be reflected upon by the very young. Barbara Cunningham, Psy.D., MFT; SHORT REVIEWS; I am adding The Sea Cat Dreams as a good resource in my new book, Life and Loss [3rd edition] . Linda Goldman, FT, MS counselling, ME early childhood education, LCPC, NBCC www.childrensgrief.net; I would definitely use The sea Cat Dreams with my clients, young and old. Youla Overbey MA, LLPC - USA; The Sea Cat Dreams is a book I would wholeheartedly recommend. Claire Casha, Master in Family Studies with over ten years' experience of family therapy work. Malta; Clinicians who treat children coping with change... will want to keep this book on their bookshelf [as] a valuable resource ... I highly recommend [it]. Barbara Cunningham, Psy.D., MFT; Review by Jennifer Douglas, What can I say about The Sea Cat Dreams but Wow! The realism of [Muza Ulasowski's] work puts the reader right ... within the book. She truly is an artist to be adored. The message of love and loss is hidden nicely within the adventures of the life of this cat but is clear enough for it to be addressed should the need arise. Coping with change also speaks clearly within this book and would be great used with a child who is sensitive to change in their lives. This book captivates, elates and moves. This is a book that shows the high quality that is available in children's literature.;
