OverviewThe Scandal of Christmas provides readings for an unforgettable Advent. Amid all the familiar trappings of the Christmas season―the decorations, the carols, the food, the gifts, the holiday movies― it is easy to miss the fact that the story of the incarnation of Christ is one of the most unlikely, inconceivable, and scandalous things God has done. An elderly priest and his wife as the parents of the forerunner of the Messiah? An unmarried teenage girl as the mother of our Lord? A poor man from a backwater town as Jesus' earthly father? The Creator of the universe as a helpless human baby? Unbelievable. Ludicrous. Borderline blasphemous. And yet, God did choose ordinary, unimpressive people to play starring roles in one of the greatest miracles of all times: the Incarnation. This Advent season, set aside your preconceived notions of the way God works―to discover anew the incredible, world-changing story of God with us. Meditate on four figures of the nativity: Zechariah, the faithful man God remembered; Joseph, the ordinary man in the shadows; Mary, the peasant girl behind the Creed; and Jesus, the irreverent Word made flesh. You may find that the God who delights in undermining our expectations also delights in exceeding them at every turn. In addition to their stories you'll be captivated by simple, yet profound, illustrations by modern-day artists. As I read this, I recognized many of his points that have become part of my knowledge bank that I draw on for daily living. I had forgotten that it was his teaching on the irreverence of Jesus that had helped me to see and experience all of life as sacred when we live to the praise of His glory. His sermons and prayers are so rich with ideas, that I am very grateful for another chance to harvest them for more insights to live by. And now that they are in print, I will be able to return again and again to add to and refresh my principles of living. May they help others, as they have helped me, to begin to live a life worthy of the Lord [by] ... growing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1:10). -Sarah Yoder, PhD, Brazil, Indiana, member of World Gospel Church At Christmas time each year, we hear many sermons about characters related to the birth of Jesus. One unique sermon Dr. Bill Coker preached sincerely spoke to my heart and has remained there for years-Joseph, the man in the shadows. Joseph was a true example in many ways of our steadfast faith in Jesus' divine birth. It is a chapter not to miss! -Mary Jo Morrow, Retired Teacher, Wilmore, Kentucky The Scandal of Christmas, although short, touched the core of Christianity. Dr. Coker genuinely unfolded the birth of Jesus by simply looking at four figures: Zechariah, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus himself. From a small town OB/GYN who has delivered over ten thousand babies into this world, I humbly enjoyed Dr. Coker's Advent book. -Vannara Sakbun, MD/PhD/FACOG, Terre Haute, Indiana Author InformationDr. William B.
