He travelled to the Levant in 1749-51 with James Dawkins, John Bouverie, to explore the Troad and locate the key sites mentioned by Homer. He was appointed Under Secretary to the Pitt the Elder, was later elected a Member of Parliament. Benjamin Anderson studies the visual and material cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, with a particular focus on late antique and Byzantine art and architecture. He publishes regularly on the history of archaeology and currently serves on the Governing Board of the Byzantine Studies Association of North America.
