Across the globe, Gypsy music is thriving. Today's leading Roma musicians connect with the ancestral power of an outcaste culture, raiding their roots and fusing them with contemporary sounds. This compilation features a range excellent groups, including the sizzling string sounds of Gypsy.cz from Prague, the energetic blend of sax and cimbalom voices of Besh o droM from Budapest, the nuevo flamenco rhythms of Ojos de Brujo from Barcelona, the Israeli mix of klezmer, balkan, hip-hop, and punk by Balkan Beat Box and the incredible brass section of Fanfare Ciocarlia from Romania. The bonus CD presents the Shukar Collective's Urban Gypsy. The band was born from the meeting of new generation musicians, Lucian Stan and Dan Handrabur, with the gypsy traditions of Shukar founders, Napoleon, Tamango and Clasic. Shukar plays ursari music using spoons, wooden barrels, or darabuka to create an urgent sound that is both emotional and soulful.
