The Role of Bioenergy in the Emerging Bioeconomy: Resources, Technologies, Sustainability and Policy

Overview

The Role of Bioenergy in the Bioeconomy: Resources, Technologies, Sustainability and Policy provides the reader with a complete understanding on how bioenergy technologies fit into the new bioeconomy paradigm. Sections focus on the main resources and technologies for bioenergy and its integration in energy systems and biorefining chains, analyze the available methodologies for assessing the sustainability of bioenergy, and address and the propose approaches that are demonstrated through concrete case studies. Additionally, the implications of bioenergy in the water-energy and land nexus is presented, along with new challenges and opportunities. This book’s strong focus on sustainability of bioenergy, both as a standalone, and in the larger context of a bio-based economy, makes it a useful resource for researchers, professionals and students in the bioenergy field who need tactics to assess the lifecycle and sustainability of bioenergy technologies and their integration into existing systems.

Reviews

Author Information

Carmen Lago has a degree in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Autónoma (Madrid). She works in CIEMAT since 1990, starting at the Renewable Energy Department. Her research activity has been developed in the areas of wind energy development, radiological protection, environmental impact and economic analysis of energy systems. Her professional experience is focused on environmental, technological and economic assessment of renewable energies versus fossil fuels. During the last years she has been working on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of biofuels and biomass from energy crops, development of GHG emissions calculation tools to evaluate the compliance of sustainability criteria of biofuels and, more recently, in sustainability analysis of the new concept of bio-refinery from advanced bioenergy. She has participated in several research projects at national and international level and is co-author of several papers and book-chapters. She has taught in various courses, masters and seminars related to energy, environment and sustainability. Natalia Caldés graduated in Economics and Business Administration from the Universidad Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona. She has an MsC in Applied Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a PhD in Agricultural and Natural Resources Economics from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain. Dr. Caldés has been working in CIEMAT since 2004, her research focuses on energy policy as well as socio-economic and environmental impact assessment of energy projects. She has participated in several European Commission and National research projects focusing on renewable energy cooperation policies as well as externalities of power generation technologies. From 2012 to 2015, she coordinated the EU funded project BETTER which aims at assessing the opportunities and barriers associated to renewable energy cooperation between Europe and neighboring countries. Yoland Lechón has a PhD in agricultural engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. She is the Head of the Energy System Analysis Unit of CIEMAT since 2013. Her main research activities have been focused in the economic evaluation of the external costs and benefits associated to the production and consumption of energy, the application of the ExternE methodology to the evaluation of externalities of energy and transport, Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment of energy technologies and processes with special focus on biomass, biofuels and solar thermal technologies, environmentally and socially extended economic input output modelling to evaluate socioeconomic and environmental effects of energy technologies and energy system modelling using techno economic partial equilibrium optimization models. She has participated in several European Commission and National research projects and has participated as evaluator in several international R&D programmes and is co-author of more than 80 papers and book chapters and more than 60 contributions to conferences and workshops.
