The Road to St. Nazaire

Overview

This is a story about two brothers and a ship. Set in the early months of the Second World War, airman John and army Joe find themselves abandoned in a demoralised and defeated France. Having a desperate need to flee before the Germans overrun the country, their separate journeys through the enveloping chaos to St Nazaire for evacuation are gripping and sometimes riotous. Meanwhile, a former luxury cruise liner is sent to rescue allied stragglers in France. Originally sent to Brest, it gets diverted to St Nazaire with disastrous consequences.

Author Information

My uncle was a Lancastria survivor. He often lamented that the sinking of the ship was not well-known enough. Churchill censored the details, believing they could damage the nation's morale so soon after the Dunkirk rescue. Others have written factual historical details without which this book would not have been possible. I am extremely grateful for their fine work. I hope that by writing a novel based on true events, I can not only entertain, but also graphically describe the horrendous details of what was Britain's worst maritime disaster.
