Author Information

Rick Sloan writes for small-d democratic activists and leaders. He is a strategist, not a historian; a partisan, not a diplomat. His writing style is more rough-hewn Buckeye than polished Ivy Leaguer. His sharpest barbs, however, are always aimed at autocrats. Sloan's career spans thirteen presidential campaigns. Between stints on Capitol Hill with Ohio Senator Howard M. Metzenbaum and Michigan Congressman John D. Dingell, Sloan ran against Representative John R. Kasich. Then, for over thirty years, he worked for labor unions and progressive organizations. Additionally, he has self-published five books and ghostwritten dozens of op-eds. After five decades of fighting the good and often-bruising fight, Sloan wanted to retire, to read, to travel, cycle, and sail-but the 2016 election changed those plans. Sensing the threats from a wannabe autocrat, he dove headfirst into writing ""Revenge of America's Unemployed,"" ""A Novel Approach to the American Dream,"" ""Expectations to Their Rule: Basques and Wabanaki in an Age of Autocrats,"" and now ""The Road Not Taken."" Each book explores the conflict between autocrats and small-d democrats. Sloan was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. He received his BA and JD degrees from Ohio State University. Currently, he splits his time between Washington, D.C., and Brooklin, Maine. His wife, Katie Smith Sloan, leads an association of nonprofit aging service providers. Katie and Rick's three children-Christopher, Jennifer, and Moria-are pursuing careers in politics, public policy, and public health and education.
