OverviewProfessional full time policing in the United Kingdom commenced just prior to the year 1839 in London. The following year by Act of Parliament, the Shire Counties began to set up their own respective police forces, including Shropshire. Several books on the subject are informative and full of statistics. I was disappointed in that they concentrated on the county town and the police chiefs. The outlying communities were ignored, especially the north of the County. I set out to put this somewhat to rights. I have carried out research for two years. This book therefore concentrates on policing that part of the police area which appears to be forgotten. It deals with the officers on the ground and those they dealt with through the years. The incidents and the officers who dealt with them are typical of those in any British Police Force. In the year 2015 Government cuts are resulting in history repeating itself. The same parts of police force areas and the same communities appear on course to be decimated once again. This situation caused me to change the title from The History of Policing to The Rise and Fall of Policing 1840 to 2013. The public are being assured policing responses will not be affected in the current changes. It will be for the reader to judge.
