He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University in 1975. Following a year working for the Burroughs-Wellcome Fund, he joined the faculty of the Pharmacology and Physiology department at the University of Chicago in 1976, where he earned the title of the William Mabie Professor of Pharmacology. In 2000, he became a member of the faculty in the Department of Pharmacology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine as the Alfred Newton Richards Professor of Pharmacology, where he is an emeritus today.
