"This is a penetrating and authoritative overview of a violent ancient civilization often revered by contemporary scholars and enthusiasts.-- ""Publishers Weekly Starred Review"" ""[Wilkinson] writes with considerable verve...[He] is nimble at conveying the sumptuous pageantry and cultural sophistication of pharaonic Egypt."" -- ""New York Times"" ""Magisterial...[A] rich portrait of ancient Egypt's complex evolution over the course of three millenniums."" -- ""Los Angeles Times"" ""Michael Page's narration flows with some of the sweep of storytelling but without diverting attention from the text to the performance. He has a deep, resonant voice, a likable English accent, and a serious but amiable manner...He conveys the sense of the text and the author's implicit judgments skillfully and subtly and renders a great number of complex Egyptian names and terms with the ring of authenticity."" -- ""AudioFile"" ""With a literary flair and a sense for a story well told, Mr. Wilkinson offers a highly readable, factually up-to-date account."" -- ""Wall Street Journal"""
