National liberation movement: what is it? How does it differ from a political or military splinter group? In the face of state power, what rights might it enjoy? As for its members, what status might they have in the struggle? Are they legally protected? This research paper, whilst making no claim to provide exhaustive answers to the above questions, attempts to address them throughout by setting out the constituent and essential elements of the recognition, particularly international recognition, of which it was both a subject and an object. It is the result of an analysis conducted from the perspective of public international law, and in particular international humanitarian law.
