The period covered is the final thirty-five years of Howells' life, when he was successful, rich, and so famous that his picture appeared on a cigar box. It is hard for us to realize that the writer we think of as a sweet old man of incurable gentility was regarded in his own time as a poisonous atheist, a foul pornographer, and a dangerous subversive, but Professor Cady documents this side of Howells.?-New Yorker
