Overview

The Gold Rush was one of the largest mass migration events in US history. After gold was discovered in California, people from all over the world rushed there in search of fortune. But not everyone benefited from the Gold Rush, and the full story of the event has at times been left out of history. Learn about the discrimination and unfair tax laws surrounding the Gold Rush and the many people who participated in the event. Have you ever considered what's missing from history books? In Left Out of History, explore the misunderstood and underexamined past in this engaging series. Compelling photographs and primary sources help bring previously buried history to light. Read Woke Books are created in partnership with Cicely Lewis, the Read Woke librarian. Inspired by a belief that knowledge is power, Read Woke Books seek to amplify the voices of people of the global majority (people who are of African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American descent and identify as not white), provide information about groups that have been disenfranchised, share perspectives of people who have been underrepresented or oppressed, challenge social norms and disrupt the status quo, and encourage readers to take action in their community.

Books in the Left Out of History series introduce topics from America's past while emphasizing the experiences, viewpoints, and contributions of those marginalized by others during the period. A typical double-page spread offers two or three short paragraphs of information accompanied by two photos reproduced in color. Spray-painted page backgrounds and borders detract slightly from the text and the well-chosen illustrations. Angel Island tells of Chinese people who came to America through the immigration center on Angel Island during the mid- to late 1800s, a period of widespread prejudice exemplified by the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Juneteenth traces the history of the celebrations that began in Texas after the Civil War, following public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation. It includes the event's growing recognition and status as a federal holiday. Gold Rush includes reports on the starvation, displacement, enslavement, and massacres of Native Americans in California in the mid-1800s as well as discrimination against Asian and Latinx people during the Gold Rush. Describing Black Americans' roles in planning and building the president's home, White House discusses some of the enslaved workers involved in this construction project and acknowledges the contributions of others whose names are unknown. Published under Lerner's Read Woke banner, these books will broaden library history collections by adding information and perspectives that more traditional volumes may have ignored. --Booklist -- Journal (1/15/2023 12:00:00 AM)
