Overview

This book should give you the means to survive if you read it and plan ahead a bit, but it will help even if you are reading it for the first time in an emergency. -DON'T PANIC! You can survive for a few days and maybe forever, if you follow this survival guide and stay calm and focused on your environment. Slow down and take a couple of deep breathes. You can and will survive. The Next couple of hours are important, so take it slow and easy-relax as much as possible. The first few hours are REALLY important in any crisis - you DO NOT want to run around like your hair is on fire - you do want to take the time to Assess, Plan and THEN implement your plan. You are fishing and all of the sudden you realize you have spent the last four or five hours floating downstream. It's getting dark and you know there is no way you are getting back to where you parked by dark or anytime soon. You try your cell phone and find that you have no service-you start to panic. WHAT DO YOU DO?

Author Information

I started going to camp as a young child, somewhere around 5 years of age - I was basically a camp kid - that's what I did in the summers growing up - every church camp, YMCA camp and many private camps all based in and around Northern MN and Canada. I learned how to build a fire, set up a base camp, tie knots, shoot a rifle, shoot a bow, and throw knives as well as many things about what to eat and not to eat outdoors. We also canoed and hiked many, many miles through what was for the most part really remote wild country. Eventually I became a camp counselor at a number of these same camps and taught many young children the skills I had learned. I also hunted and fished from an early age learning to fish at around 5-6 years old and hunting ducks with my Dad at around 9 years old with a shotgun that kicked like a mule. As I got older and progressed in my desire to challenge myself in a more intense wilderness adventure my types of camping experience became more challenging. I attended more survival type programs like menogen, a 30 day program in the boundary waters of Northern MN and Canada and then Outward Bound in the mountains of Colorado, climbing and building shelters and culminating with a solo experience alone in the wilderness. When I attended college in Oregon I continued camping and taught outdoor survival camping during the summer as a special program. My idea for the Survival Coffee Can and Personal Survival Kit which I describe in the book was developed over a life time of experience's and has been refined along the way - it is one of the foundations for survival that I believe everyone should have in their home and can be assembled easily at very little cost to anyone who has the common sense and the desire to be prepared for any emergency.
