Overview

For some few, writing comes easily without practice or training, but for the great majority it develops only with training and much application. The most difficult part seems, for most students, to be the beginning: what to write about and how to get into that first sentence. This book is designed to set a scene, giving the student a beginning, a focus point for them to launch into their own imagination and expand upon that point. It is an invaluable tool for teachers, who have heavy workloads already, to stimulate students' imagination and thus bring them to be more competent writers. Writing well is the key to success in the academic world, for few who cannot put their thoughts on paper in an orderly and logical manner will succeed in higher education. All aspects of writing are important --- sentence structure, spelling, and organization of thoughts are valuable tools --- but the most important tools are a stimulated imagination and having had acknowledgement of the creative effort. The Rainy Day Book began as The Very Boring Day Book, which I created for my own children to work in when they could think of nothing to do. Since it rained often on the Gulf Coast, where we lived at the time, the title evolved into the one you see today. I used a loose-leaf binder filled with notebook paper, each headed with a few sentences, that they could remove, a page at a time, to write the rest of the story. It worked very well: my children, even one who is learning disabled, became quite articulate and able to access their creativity. For those who find difficulty in tying the story up and coming to a logical point of conclusion, there is another book, Finishing What You Begin. The story line in between is dealt with in All About the Middles
