She unhappily attended boarding schools in England before moving, aged nine, to live in France and Germany. The family returned to London in 1872. By her late teens she had published numerous poems. She married in 1880. Nesbit's output was prolific, she published about 40 books for children. According to her biographer. Julia Briggs, Nesbit was the first modern writer for children.
