The Quiet Ones

Overview

When seventy-one-year-old novelist Harlan Gage finds his neighbor Gerald dead in a chair facing a window - coffee still warm, newspaper still open - he knows immediately that the death is not what the medical examiner will say it is. He knows because he has felt this specific coldness before. Because there is a notebook in a box in his basement written in a nine-year-old boy's careful block letters that describes Gerald's death in 1963. Because something has been in the corner of his living room since Gerald died and Harlan can feel it getting larger. He has known about this thing his entire life. He spent sixty-two years being less than he was to stay hidden from it. That is over now. Set in the small towns and deep forests of northern Michigan, The Quiet Ones follows Harlan as he assembles an unlikely field of people around him - a retired nurse who has been doing it in hospital rooms for thirty years, a piano teacher who fills silences so completely there is no room for the wrong note, a hardware store owner who says true things at town meetings, a thirty-year-old woman whose mother was the thing's most recent victim, a seven-year-old boy who has been hiding since he was five. And at the center of all of it: Wren. Harlan's six-year-old granddaughter with dark patient eyes who hears truth beneath words, who sees the thing completely, and who has never once in her life learned to be less than she is. The thing feeds on gaps. On the space between what people are and what the world pressures them to perform. On the accumulated weight of people who have been less for too long. It grows as the ambient cruelty of the age grows - not causing the cruelty but flourishing in it the way mold flourishes in damp. It finds the ones who are becoming more fully themselves and it moves in during the opening before the protection is in place.
