Table of ContentsReviewsThe Puritans on Conversion is a treasure trove of biblical wisdom, evangelical piety, and practical counsel on how a sinner is drawn to the living Christ through conversion. But it is not just a book for those experiencing the converting work of the Spirit for the first time. Those who have walked with God will also find it instructive and convicting. In an age of easy believism, cheap grace, and almost Christians, this small but important collection shows us a better way, a way of attending to the one thing needful and of being thoroughly humbled and brought before the Lord. --Randall J. Pederson, teacher, Zion Christian School, Byron Center, Michigan, and coauthor of Meet the Puritans It has been said that 'prayer is the soul's breathing itself into the bosom of its heavenly Father, ' thereby making it 'the highest and greatest activity of the soul.' In prayer we pour out our hearts to the King of kings and Lord of lords, sensible of the mercy we need (confession and petition) and of the mercy we receive (praise and thanksgiving). Such prayer is not learned by following a list of rules or employing a set of forms; rather, it flows from a principle of new life. This reality is wonderfully demonstrated in the present volume, which brings together the insights of three Puritan divines: John Preston, Nathaniel Vincent, and Samuel Lee. Here is an edifying treatment of what it means to draw near to God in prayer. --J. Stephen Yuille, professor of pastoral theology and spiritual formation, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary It is precisely in the area of setting forth the biblical doctrines of conversion that the Puritan preachers have so much to teach us. --Albert N. Martin, from the foreword Author InformationSamuel Bolton Bolton was born in 1606 and educated at Cambridge. He pastored three different churches in London, where his ministry was a blessing to many souls. He was nominated as one of the additional members of the Westminster Assembly. He was later chosen master of Christ's College at Cambridge University. It is said that he studied not only to preach the word but to live as he preached. The Banner of Truth has published a paperback by him entitled The True Bounds of Christian Freedom. Nathaniel Vincent Vincent was a prodigy. He entered university at the age of eleven and had earned an MA degree by the age of eighteen. He was one of the ejected ministers of 1662 but returned to London after the fire of 1666 and preached to large multitudes in the city's ruins. He spent many years in prison and under persecution for his nonconformity. He died at the age of fifty-three on June 21, 1697, and was buried in Bunhill Fields in London, the nonconformists' burial ground. Thomas Watson Watson needs no introduction to lovers of the Puritans. He is one of the most read and beloved of all the Puritan writers and preachers. Nearly all his works have been reprinted by Soli Deo Gloria or the Banner of Truth. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
