The Pumpkin Man: Origins of a Halloween Tradition

Overview

Have you ever wondered why we carve pumpkins at Halloween every year? How did this tradition get started? Where and when did it all begin? Journey back in time when goblins and werewolves lived in a deep dark forest and wanted to exact a tribute from the people of a small village. Then a small voice came from the crowd: ""Maybe,"" she said quietly, ""Maybe the Pumpkin Man could help us."" Join us on an adventure to answer these questions and more when the children and parents learn to put their trust in a mysterious stranger in their hour of danger!

Author Information

Lin Butler is a father and grandfather who wanted his children and grandchildren to know how the wonderful tradition of carving a pumpkin at Halloween may have begun. Here is a tale of parents and children who came to know and trust a stranger in their hour of need. Lin was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He went to college at Manchester University in Indiana and later attended Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. He has been a community organizer, social worker, counselor, and instructor in Baltimore, Maryland, and a manager and chaplain in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over the years, Lin has learned to appreciate deep listening and the telling of a good story. Leigh Partington is a freelance artist and instructor. She has been creating and doing ceramic-hand-building in her studio, ""Playin' in the Mud"" for over thirty years in Washington Grove, Maryland. Leigh teaches mixed-media workshops for children, young adults, and persons with special needs because she believes it is important for people of all ages and abilities to express themselves visually and tactically. Everyone has an artist within them, and their imagination is their only limit.
