OverviewExcerpt from The Pseudo-Ciceronian Consolatio: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts, and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree, of Doctor of Philosophy The ultimae origin of this dissertation may be found in the interest in epideictic literature aroused by a seminar study of the Agricola of Tacitus under Professor G. L. Hendrickson, then of Chicago, now of Yale. Added to this was the curiosity which any anonymous document must inspire, especially one of literary, historical, or even merely antiquarian interest. I desire to record my gratitude to the Bibliotecario of the Biblioteca Civica, Bergamo, Italy, for ready and courteous assistance given me while a student there, and later; to Dr. B. L. Ullman, of the University of Chicago, particularly for material gathered by him while abroad; to Professor G. J. Laing and Dr. C. H. Beeson, of the University of Chicago, for timely assistance and valuable criticism; and especially to Professor Hendrickson, at whose suggestion, and under whose direction, the work was done. It is but just to add that the distance and almost continuous separation between us during the progress of the work have deprived it in no small degree of the benefits Of his sound judgment and searching eriti cism, which would have removed many blemishes.
