The Pryce of Fame

Overview

A ransom demand forces Arabella Pryce to face the father who abandoned her and the secrets he left behind. Colorado, 1887, Arabella Pryce, celebrated actress and reluctant hotelier, is fighting to keep the doors open at her grand Hotel. With business faltering and a rival threatening her future, she is also trying to navigate a precarious relationship with the town sheriff whose protective instincts often clash with her fiercely independent spirit. Just as Arabella begins to regain her footing, a letter arrives that shatters her fragile balance. Her estranged father, long absent from her life, has resurfaced in New York and may be in grave danger. A scathing newspaper exposé links him to a notorious literary forgery ring and names Arabella as a possible accomplice. When a ransom demand follows, Arabella must choose between staying in La Plata Springs to protect her inheritance or risking everything to uncover the truth and save the man who once abandoned her. With her loyal friend Cordelia at her side, and the faithful ghost, Percival Blank, Arabella travels to the glittering and treacherous world of Gilded Age New York. There, in smoky literary salons and shadowed alleyways, she unravels a web of secrets, betrayals, and long-buried family truths. As the deadline closes in and danger tightens around them, it is her wit, determination, and performer’s instincts that may prove to be her greatest weapons. Pryce of Fame is a captivating blend of intrigue, romance, and redemption. With sharp dialogue, historical elegance, and a heroine who refuses to follow society’s rules, this latest instalment explores how far we will go to protect the people we love and to discover who we truly are.

Author Information

Winner of the 2019 Hillerman Southwest Fiction Award. When she’s not on a horse, or walking along the beautiful cottonwood-laden acequias of Corrales, New Mexico; or basking on white sand beaches under the Big Island Hawaiian sun, Kari Bovée is escaping into the past—scheming murder and mayhem for her characters both real and imagined in her award-winning historical Annie Oakley Mystery series, Grace Michelle Mysteries and The Pryce of Murder series. Born in northern New Mexico, Kari developed a love of reading, writing, and history early in life. Her most treasured Christmas gift as a young child was a toy typewriter. After graduating with a B.A. in English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing, Kari found work as a technical writer at a Fortune 500 tech company. But, her love of story-telling never waned. While staying at home with two young children, Kari wrote her first novel and hasn’t stopped. She and her husband live happily in rural Corrales, New Mexico with their horses, dogs, and cat.
