A survey of the portrayal of God as Father in the Old Testament and Second Temple Judaism, in the ministry of Jesus, in the Synoptic Gospels, and in the writings of Paul and John. Marianne Meye Thompson argues that, rather than rooting the image of God in a debate about gender, Father terminology really identifies an ancestor who grants an inheritance. She addresses theological and practical questions in the light of the Bible, ultimately arguing for neither a strong feminist nor a traditionalist position on God imagery.

Marianne Meye Thompson is George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Among her books is The Promise of the Father: Jesus and God in the New Testament, published by Westminster John Knox Press.
