MacIver is a distinguished citizen and much honored elder statesman of our discipline. His reflections on juvenile delinquency, its prevention and control, are therefore of special interest. This compact volume is the result of MacIver's six-year -close-up study of the agencies in New York City concerned with juvenile delinquency,- and a subsequent broader study of the problem undertaken with the support of NIMH. The focus is on the need for outlines of -an informed, concerted, and well-directed strategy- of delinquency control.... MacIver calls for more and better research and for comprehensive planning and coordination of -antidelinquency programs.- One can hardly disagree with such noble sentiments.- --James F. Short, Jr., American Sociological Review -The writing is lucid, graceful, and balanced to a degree that delights and astonishes the reader.... The social sciences can and often are used, as MacIver uses them, to lend paternalism new coercive strength; though in the long run, they tend to balance to favor freedom.- --Edgar Z.
