A 1968 graduate of West Point, Cohn was a United States Army airborne ranger and led a reconnaissance platoon in Vietnam. His medals include two Silver Stars and a Purple Heart. After convalescing from gunshot wounds to the head, neck, chest, abdomen, leg, and hand, Cohn was retired as a captain. He and his wife of over forty years, Kathryn, have four children and six grandchildren. They reside in McLean, Virginia. William Hughes is an AudioFile Earphones Award-winning narrator. A professor of political science at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon, he received his doctorate in American politics from the University of California at Davis.
