Overview

"RNA-sequencing is one of the most powerful tools available to cancer researchers, but it is not without its challenges. In this book, Dr. Rathe provides a plethora of user-friendly tools and methods to assist cancer researchers in making the most of their RNA- sequencing data. Dr. Rathe describes a novel approach to prioritize the gene and pathway changes in controlled experiments (DEAPR), as well as a causal deconstruction process for uncovering disease-specific expression patterns in patient samples (NODC). In addition, her experience with characterizing unusual cellular changes directly related to the use of CRISPR and Sleeping Beauty is a must for researchers utilizing these cell modification techniques. Her personalized approach makes the reading experience enjoyable as well as informative. ""I am pleased that Sue has pulled together this entertaining and easy-to-understand technical manual, so cancer researchers outside of my laboratory can benefit from her experience and avoid many of the pitfalls associated with RNA-seq data."" -David A. Largaespada, PhD Professor, University of Minnesota"

Author Information

"Dr. Susan K. Rathe is a cancer biologist at the University of Minnesota, where she is gradually easing into retirement. Before returning to school at the age of 51 to get her BS in Genetics, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry, followed by a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, Sue had a lengthy career in the railroad industry, where she started as a keypunch operator and became one of the pioneer women yardmasters in 1975. She combined her hands-on railroad experiences with her passion for computers to carve out a software career that took her from a programmer at Burlington Northern in 1976 to an Assistant Vice President and the Chief Information Officer for Illinois Central in 1998.Dr. Rathe's latest publication, The Power and Versatility of RNA-Seq in Laboratory Research, is the culmination of 20 years of research experience and explains her extraordinary shift in careers from railroading to cancer research while providing a practical guide for cancer researchers to make the most of RNA-sequencing data in their laboratory experiments. In addition to this book, Sue has contributed to 18 cancer research articles.Sue Rathe married her husband, Dave, in 1972 in Lincoln, Nebraska. They have been blessed with two children, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. After demanding careers involving ""way too much"" plane travel, Dave and Sue retired to a modest lake home in south-central Minnesota. They cohabitate with two highly energetic and entertaining German Shorthaired Pointers."
