OverviewIt really did happen overnight. The day I decided to change who I was as a person, and become what I most reviled, brought social success that seemed impossible only days before. Decades soon fell away. Law school, an unfortunate foray into politics, and dozens of empty relationships all drifted into the past. It seemed I would never recapture my true self and become successful at life. As a child, our move from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Bible Belt had only exacerbated my family's peculiarities. My doting mother had enraptured us with delusions about her psychic abilities, aliens watching over us, and the looming end of civilization. My father had alternated between distant and angry. I was a social pariah. Mounting social failures challenged popular social beliefs that propose we are all basically the same, we should all just be ourselves, and we should never stop pursuing our dreams. As I abandoned those ideas, a path to a normal life began to emerge from the darkness. Forty years after my journey began, I walked into my favorite watering hole one evening to discover friends had organized an unprecedented surprise party for my birthday. At what point had everything come together, and how did I come to deserve these wonderful people in my life? This is my confession.
