OverviewThis text deals with the relationship between popular and erudite culture in Gilberto Mendonça Teles's collection of poems Hora aberta (2003). In relation to popular culture, the characters Saci and Camonge stand out. It is with them that the artist seeks to create a new aesthetic for the poems written from the book Saciologia goiana (1982). These characters, one from Brazilian folklore and the other from cordel literature, were chosen to compose two masks used to hide the true facets of a literary critic, Teles himself. On the scholarly side, we find Camões, who creates a dialogue between Europe and Brazil. Goiás and the sertão are also explored, as they help to compose the popular/scholarly dichotomy.
