The Place of the Voluntary Worker in Civic Life and Social Work (Classic Reprint)

Overview

Excerpt from The Place of the Voluntary Worker in Civic Life and Social Work The War came upon us with great suddenness, but it was hardly declared before we saw a great uprising on all sides of voluntary activity. It 15 true that that activity was not invariably wise in its objects, and some energy and money were wasted, but in the main it has been a wonderful development. It quickly seized the positions where it was most needed, and on nearly every side has achieved a remarkable success. We do not know what may be the ultimate verdict upon particular portions of the work, nor to what extent it may be thought desirable for the State to take over some of this activity and make it part of the per manent and official work of Government, but there has been very little well-founded criticism or fault finding in connection with the great voluntary War organisations. One has only to mention the work of the the various Red Cross Units, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Associa tion, the Local Representative Committees, the War Savings Associations, and many others, to recognise this. Never in the history of the nation, and probably 1n the history of the world, has there been such an enormous manifestation of voluntary devotion to social service.
