Overview

Excerpt from The Pictorial Gallery of English Race Horses: Containing Portraits of All the Winners of the Derby, Oaks and St. Leger Stakes, During the Last Twenty Years; And a History of the Principal Operation of the Turf Racing in the Olden Time, although, perhaps, in interest and merit equal to that of our day, was wanting in the modern excellence of chronicles, descriptive and pictorial. The specimen at the head of this page, faithfully copied from an old print representing A view of a Horse Match at Newmarket, between Grey-Windham and Bay Bolton, painted from the Life, by that celebrated artist, Mr John Wootton, will bear sufficient testimony to the character of the pictorial representations of those famous races, which no chronicler has been found to describe. As a specimen of the different style of modern days, the present volume is offered to the public, in the belief that a complete collection of the Annals of the Turf, during the past twenty years, will not be found uninteresting by those who take pleasure in its pursuits.
