In August 1991 the armed forces of Saddam Hussein poured across the border into the neighboring countryside of Kuwait. These Iraqi invaders were the spearhead of an effort by that nation's dictator to overwhelm tiny, but oil-rich Kuwait. Over a period of months Saddam Hussein's invasion and occupation of Kuwait was bitterly opposed by diplomats of America and many other nation. Eventually, a coalition of military forces was gathered under the auspices of the United Nations, including more than 500,000 American soldiers. The coalition, led by the United States, also possessed smart weapons, stealth aircraft, night fighting capacities and armored vehicles more mobile and powerful than any previously used in combat. The initial air attack on Iraq was followed by a stunning ground assault that led to the defeat of Saddam Hussein's invasion force. Kuwait was freed from its occupation and Saddam was left in power in Iraq. The story of what is known as the Persian Gulf War is presented in this illustrated book. As part of the MyReportLinks.com series, this text combines a rapid paced narrative with numerous Internet references. The Persian Gulf War was a conflict that unveiled a new era of weaponry. That war, as author Holden ably portrays in this fine book, was a tactical victory for the coalition forces but an incomplete success. Kuwait was liberated but the ongoing presence of Saddam Hussein left a cloak of darkness over both the region and his own nation., Children's Literature
