Overview

There is a widely acknowledged failure in leadership development across the spectrum, from corporations to communities. The fact is, few organizations are confident in and comfortable with the sustainability of their leadership teams, and healthcare is not immune to this deficiency. From topics like The Journey to Leadership and Defining the Leader You Want to Become, to Inspiration and Innovation, The People Value Proposition acknowledges that leadership begins with the individual, but emphasizes that by recognizing and nurturing the value of others, everyone succeeds. Author Dr. Stanley Harris discusses the importance of empathy, engagement, and motivation to sustain connectivity, inspire innovation, and enable new leaders to emerge. Written as a semi-autobiographical account of leadership development that covers key principles of leadership, The People Value Proposition is conveyed from the unique perspective of the author's life and experience. It challenges both leaders and potential leaders to acknowledge and promote the value of every individual, enabling optimal utilization of resources and continued team success. How does this book give you an advantage? Through his own experiences, Dr. Stanley Harris guides the reader to envision their own ascent as a leader and helps them understand that part of their legacy should be a perpetual cycle of leadership. Here are just some of the topics the author discusses in detail: The Journey to Leadership Organizational Culture Defining the Leader You Want to Become Seeking Value Engagement The Power of Empathy Inspiration and Innovation Leading Change Transformational Leadership Understanding and Utilizing a Multigenerational Workforce The Gender Gap Diversity and Inclusion The Perpetual Cycle of Leadership Reflections on Leadership in a Challenging Time The People Value Proposition will expand physician leaders' appreciation of the importance of focusing on the value of colleagues and co-workers to ensure their own success. Reviews

The People Value Proposition is an exceptional book. Dr. Stanley Harris provides a lifetime of lessons in humility, determination, leadership, and change management. Despite spending more than a decade as a physician CEO of a health system, I discovered many unique leadership insights in this book. The chapter on diversity and inclusion is especially perceptive and reflects Dr. Harris' remarkable career, which included more than a few encounters with racism and bigotry. His clear-sighted arguments in support of a more inclusive leadership style are fact-based and compelling without any hint of apology or regret. His reflections on the lessons of COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd are contemporary additions to his time-honored leadership adage of see one, do one, teach one. His many examples of bringing leadership to life have benefited those of us who have had the good fortune of knowing him, and those who don't know him would benefit greatly from reading this superb book. John M. Murphy, MD, FACP President & Chief Executive Officer Nuvance Health The People Value Proposition is full of practical insights into what makes for good leadership shared through the life experience of a super talented and insightful physician leader. The reader is immediately captured by Dr. Harris's artful, deeply personal vignettes, making the book very real with applications to situations that all aspiring leaders can related to. In addition, the relevance of diversity and inclusion today is manifest in the author's own history as an African American making it to executive ranks of modern American society. THANK YOU, Dr. Harris, for sharing this wonderful work that all of us attempting to lead can use to guide us as we chart our journeys forward . . . See one, do one, teach one. . . LEAD! Minalkumar Patel, MD Chief Executive Officer Abacus Insights Dr. Stanley E. Harris' book, The People Value Proposition: See One, Do One, Teach One . . . LEAD, offers aspiring and experienced leaders at all organizational levels both inspiration and counsel on the many challenges of being an effective leader. Through an in-depth personal reflection on his own leadership journey as a medical doctor and healthcare executive, Dr. Harris connects his own narrative and experiences to the essential practices that high-quality, high-impact leaders in any field or profession should aspire to. This book offers a wealth of practical advice that is specific and actionable, all illustrated by personal stories and examples, to show how leaders can improve and deepen their own capacities and skills. It is an excellent volume for use in leadership development programs and in courses on leadership. James P. Honan Senior Lecturer on Education Harvard Graduate School of Education The People Value Proposition is much more than a guide to leadership, but rather a guide to being the best person you can be. Through stories and examples, Dr. Harris shares the kernels of wisdom he's gathered over the years - listen, lead by example, and don't forget the HUMOR (a handy mnemonic that sums it up). Two important sentences continue to resonate with me: People are leaders' raison d'etre, their reason for being. Without people, a leader is just the one out front. Daniel Halevy, MD FASN CPC Vice President, Senior Medical Director, Healthfirst Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
