After a few years with Balfour Beatty digging a tunnel in the Midlands and helping to design Kainji Dam situated in Nigeria he then began teaching Civil and Structural Engineering at NESCOT in Ewell, Surrey. During this time, in 1976, he obtained a PhD from Surrey University. His interest in prime numbers grew out of a discovery in the early 1980s while waiting to pick up his son from school.
