Schubert was a Historian with the U.S. Department of Defense from 1975 to 2003. During 2003–2004, he was a Fulbright lecturer at Babas-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He has published books on U.S. military operations and construction and Buffalo Soldiers in the U.S. frontier Army and, most recently, Hungarian Borderlands: From the Habsburg Empire to the Axis Alliance, the Warsaw Pact, and the European Union (2011).
