Overview

A. Dykes Spicer's The Paper Trade was first published in 1907. At the time, it was becoming clear that there needed to be substantial investigation and documentation of the productive capacity of Britain, and this led Spicer to embark upon his 'descriptive and historical survey of the paper trade' over the preceding century. Writing from a distributor's point of view, but using data obtained from sources such as the editor of the World's Paper Trade Review, Spicer outlines processes from the pulping of raw material through to use and distribution. As Spicer originally hoped, his book proved valuable not just to those directly involved with the paper trade, but to any person with a general interest in the industrial conditions of Britain in the nineteenth century. It remains a useful source for historians today.
