This book is the conversation I wish I could have with every patient before surgery. Not the 15-minute consultation where I rush through risks and benefits. The real conversation. The one where I tell you that your knee will probably click for the rest of your life, that you'll need help showering for weeks, that you might not be able to kneel comfortably ever again, that recovery takes months not weeks, and that some patients end up worse despite everything being done correctly. I also tell you that most patients, five years later, say they should have done it sooner. That the grinding, constant arthritic pain is worse than recovery pain. That being able to walk without limping, sleep without waking from pain, and participate in life again is worth the trade-offs. That joint replacement, for all its limitations, gives most people back something they thought they'd lost forever. I had my own knee replaced at 51. I knew exactly what I was getting into-I'd done hundreds of knee replacements by then. I still hated the first two weeks. I still felt discouraged at six weeks when I wasn't as recovered as I thought I'd be. I still have occasional aching, clicking with certain movements, and awareness that my knee is artificial. I also walk three miles daily without pain, ski with my kids, and sleep through the night. I'm glad I did it. But I went in with realistic expectations because I knew the reality. You deserve the same honesty. I've structured this book to follow the journey-from the slow deterioration that leads to surgery, through the decision-making process, into the technical details of what actually happens in the operating room, through the recovery that nobody adequately prepares you for, and finally to the long-term reality of living with an artificial joint.
