This expansive collection counters dominant mid-20th-century definitions of the American South and its literature...present multiple Souths, articulate their functions in national imaginaries, and examine the African American, Native, Latino/Latina, and Asian presences and narratives that dialogically reconstruct the region and literature readers thought they knew. Drawing on sexuality studies, Native studies, and postcolonial and postmodern theory, the essays reinstate the South's multigeneric literatures within transnational contexts and discourses, the plantation Americas (Cuba, Haiti, New Orleans), Native textualities, and European outlaw archetypes.
