It works both as a tool for individual researchers and as additional reading material in classes on onomastics and related fields. * Peter Backhaus, Professor at the Department of English Language and Literature, Waseda University, Tokyo, Linguist * There is no better single guide to the range, quality and potential of current onomastic research. * Peter McClure, Journal of the English Place-Name Society * a judicious synthesis covering a wide range of onomastic areas and it goes well beyond the historic-philological approach of traditional onomastic studies. Professor Hough is to be congratulated for having assembled a team of experts to produce a work of reference which will be most useful to professional onomasts and non-specialists alike. * John Insley, European Romantic Review * Author InformationCarole Hough is Professor of Onomastics at the University of Glasgow, where she has lectured for nearly 20 years.
