Her research has examined comparative and historical patterns of violence, gender and intimate violence, the imprisonment of women, and relationships between legitimate and illegitimate violence. She is also the co-author of three books: Violence and Crime in Cross-National Perspective (1984), Murdering Holiness: The Trials of Edmund Creffield and George Mitchell (2003), and Marking Time in the Golden State: Women's Imprisonment in California (2005). Bill McCarthy is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Davis. His current research focuses on service work and health, race and crime, violence, and harassment.
