Reviews

Whether you are a Christian or not, the Bible, and particularly the Old Testament, is a fascinating document, to be read as religious tract, historical text or simply as an enormously dramatic and theatrical piece of literature - especially in the familiar Authorised Version used here. Skilful editing by Perry Keenlysides has reduced an unwieldy tome to the most familiar and profound texts, whether it's exciting stories like David's conquering of Goliath or significant episodes of Jewish history such as the Exodus, the repercussions of which we are still seeing today. The most poetic interludes are also included, notably the luscious Song of Solomon. No audio publisher does this sort of thing better than Naxos, here using superb and experienced readers including Philip Madoc and Anton Lesser, whose rich voices add a further resonance, and act as a constant reminder that this is a thunderous, Old Testament God we are dealing with, and there is fire, brimstone and eternal damnation hanging over the whole affair. Clever use of suitable classical music gives continuity to the whole and creates useful breathing space in an occasionally apocalyptic collection. Marvellous stuff for believers, historians and lovers of sheer drama. (Kirkus UK)
