OverviewThis study focuses on the importance of nurses in home visits (HV) as an action to promote health. Its general objective is to identify whether nurses plan and practice actions aimed at promoting family health during home visits within the Family Health Strategy. This was a descriptive qualitative study carried out in the city of Itaquara/Ba, between April and May 2012. The aim was to ascertain the meaning for residents of the home visits carried out by nurses from the Family Health Program (PSF) team. Data was collected randomly in the homes through semi-structured interviews and direct observation in the homes, as well as observing the nurses' practice during home visits. The analysis of the data reveals that residents are unaware of the role of nurses in home visits in the Family Health Program, confusing them with preventive actions linked to the CHAs. Although its role is unclear to residents, HV as a strategy is well received and considered important for health promotion. It was concluded that HV as promotion is the basis for Public Health in the country.
