OverviewThe Nucleus of Atoms assembles and examines data collected on the nucleus since its discovery, and develops structure models of various nuclei and discusses mechanisms that appear to produce these structures. The Nucleus of Atoms interprets the data to determine what they reveal about the structure of the nucleus. It looks at what the data imply about the likely evolution from simple to more complex nuclei, and considers how changes in masses and charges of successive isotopes translate into structural changes and design differences between them. The book looks for patterns in the data that hint at the mechanisms that formed the various nuclei and attempts to quantify them. Finally, The Nucleus of Atoms proposes physical models of nuclei from isotopes of hydrogen through uranium and beyond. Models of the alpha-multiple nuclei from carbon-12 to calcium-40 are proposed, as well as the stable nuclei with multiple-of-four mass numbers from sulfur-36 through lead-208. Several of the isotopes with mass numbers greater than 208 are modeled including thorium-232 and its decay series, uranium-235 and uranium-238, the plutonium 239 and 242 isotopes, and the curium isotopes 246 and 248.
