Overview

An examination and evaluation of the modern movement in architecture. It begins with the masters who inaugurated the international style, such as Wright, Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe, and continues through the practitioners in the formative 1950s and 1960s, including Saarinen, Stone and Kahn, through to exemplary works up to the present day by architects such as Barnes, Rogers, Hopkins and Jones, and later works by the pioneers of that style. The book elucidates the basic design ideas, forms, techniques and materials that characterise modernism, together with the social, philosophical and aesthetic principles that inform the work. A backlash against the bankrupt melange of styles of postmodernism is leading to renewed interest in the human-centred simplicity of modernism, and this work, authored by one of its practitioners, reacquaints the reader with the essential components of the style, provides practical guidelines for today's architecture, and makes a persuasive case for a return to its principles.

Reviews

The Snibbes--she a designer and he an architect, a former associate of Edward D. Stone--have done a bold thing: they have produced an old-fashioned picture book of Modernism as a gesture of defiance against what they call 'a deluge of Postmodernism propaganda', which they believe to be devaluing architecture in the U.S. The result is touchingly nostalgic: many years have gone by since I have seen so heartfelt a championing of, for example, John Carl Warnecke & Associates' Hennepin County Government Centre in Minneapolis of 1977... ...A flood of admiration for old-fashioned idealism and for simple delight in new forms and spaces is projected through double page spreads... There are...some pleasant surprises: there are architects here, most noticeably ABK and Powell & Moya, who have never received the critical attention they deserve for their later work... ...a fun and healthy book for a beginner.
