The New Hunger

Overview

In the domed city of Kronos, the unquiet Quicken first. Or so the authorities claim, after the Quickening's spontaneous mutation rocks the city, turning some of its youth-already maligned for their body modifications and sexual freedom-into Flesh Eaters or Healers. But now dawns the deceptive freedom of Era-2, and the formerly incarcerated Quickened are eager to join parties and protests, revelries and revolutions. Nora is an unregistered Eater who inadvertently killed her queerplatonic partner Eden when she monstered, while her sister Evi took the fall for her. Except Evi lied: Eden is alive, a Healer caught in the espionage plot led by rich, mysterious benefactor March. Nora-hacker, coward, cannibal-is used to hiding in her sister's shadow and the privilege afforded to her by Evi's sacrifice. However, Nora must come out of hiding because she has something March's revolution needs: a data-looting device capable of exposing the cruelty of the correctional facilities and leading Kronos into a new era of kinship. Nora is thrust into community-building and facility-infiltrating, struggling to make things right with her former queerplatonic partner as well as her increasingly volatile sister. However, in a city prone to devouring its children, new hungers sprout, and every glittering revolution comes with a steep price. A tale of civil unrest, betrayal, and belonging set in futuristic, climate-catastrophe Greece. For fans of Wilder Girls, Tokyo Ghoul, The Wicked + The Divine, and Blade Runner.

Reviews

""Through hallucinatory parties, whispered conspiracies, and quiet heartbreaks, Margariti crafts a narrative that is equal parts bodily horror and queer resilience."" - Literary Titan ""Interpersonal angst; a drug-enhanced, trauma-filled sibling relationship; and queer eroticism. This first outing is a page-turner."" - Publishers Weekly
