The Mystical Art of Shakespeare Volume II: The Meaning of The Taming of the Shrew & Romeo and Juliet

Overview

Shakespeare's plays are poetical masterpieces that not only mesmerize us with their lyrical beauty but also convey sage messages critically important to humanity. This means that Shakespeare is a greater literary genius than previously thought, and his plays more wonderful and profound than previously imagined. The Mystical Art of Shakespeare Volume II explains how Shakespeare meticulously crafted every scene of The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo & Juliet to each convey its central spiritual message, using three unique Shakespearean techniques: cohesive unity, thematic resonance, and focused allegorical scenes. This book is written as a running commentary of the two plays so readers can follow the narrative of The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo & Juliet like reading a novel. The increased understanding from the commentary intensifies the drama and reflects how Shakespeare conveys his spiritual messages through our emotional involvement. It is akin to learning by direct experience-the initiatic quality that makes Shakespeare's plays an invaluable gift to humanity.

Author Information

Kenneth K. C. Chan was born in Malaysia and currently lives in Singapore. He holds university degrees in both medicine and physics, and has formerly worked as a doctor in Singapore and as a scientific editor for World Scientific. He is a follower of Tibetan Buddhism and a student of Western Mysticism, with a deep interest in the interactions between the spiritual traditions and the arts and sciences. He wrote an original scientific paper on the theory of rela-tivity entitled Time and Space, which was approved for publica-tion by Kip Thorne, the Physics Nobel Laureate in 2017. The paper explains for the first time why the speed of light is con-stant (based on his understanding of both relativity and human physiology) and was published in 1993 in the ISPE anthology: Thinking on the Edge.In 2004, he published the first edition of Quintessence of Dust: The Mystical Meaning of Hamlet. The book was nominated for the Book of the Year award by Foreword Magazine in 2004, and was awarded an Honorable Mention. The second edition was published in 2024.In 2016, he wrote an online article, Why Relativity Exists, which presents the key findings of his paper, Time and Space, to a general audience. It emphasizes that consciousness is a critical component of our reality. In the same year, he also wrote an-other online paper entitled A Direct Experiential Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, which shows how the Buddhist Madhyamika philosophy solves the mystery of quantum physics. In 2021, he published an online article entitled The Spiritual Path, which shows the remarkable synchronicity between Madhyamika philosophy, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Kab-balah Tree of Life, and the Tarot. This synchronicity reveals that the different spiritual traditions draw their inspiration from the same source, and together provides us with a map depicting the stages of the spiritual quest on the path to enlightenment. In 2024, he published The Mystical Art of Shakespeare Vol-ume I: The Meaning of Much Ado About Nothing & The Comedy of Errors and in 2025, he published The Mystical Art of Shakespeare Volume III: The Meaning of Twelfth Night & Macbeth. The above online articles can be viewed at the author's website at kenneth-chan.com.
