OverviewAsh and Willow are teenage twins: Willow a girl and Ash a boy. However, most people think Ash is a girl and, as a result, he's pretty mixed up about his sexuality. His orientation is clarified after he experiences a shocking encounter with a predatory older girl. Soon after he finds excitement and romance with sexually precocious Llinos who's recently moved to the Lake District from Wales. Ash and musically gifted Llinos decide to form a band, meanwhile Willow's relationship with young farmer Mark breaks down as she realises that she's actually attracted to other girls. The band, now with three new members, heads to a village festival just over the border in Scotland with a view to making their musical debut. There they meet Karen and violinist Kirsty with whom Willow falls head over heels in love. Eventually both Ash and Willow settle down on the Scottish side of the border with their partners, while Llinos's dad, Gron, is still on the trail of the elusive Urien Rheged. This is a story of relationships and sexual discovery but it is also a musical exploration following the haunting melodies of the Mysterious Trees.
